Why the Tikino projector is a gentle alternative to screens for children
Posted by Equipe Tikino on
Electronic screens are everywhere, and their use from a young age raises many questions. Attention disorders, visual health, agitation, isolation, difficulty falling asleep… The effects of overexposure are well documented.
But should we completely give up on images, or can we find healthier alternatives?
🎥 Projector vs. electronic screen: what's the difference?
👀 Projection: better for the eyes

One of the most immediate benefits of projection is that it's gentler on the eyes due to its images being:
- large
- at a good distance from the eyes
- without backlighting
- without direct blue light
We had our Tikino projector tested in the lab and the results are conclusive: 24x less blue light exposure than with a tablet.
🤝 A shared rather than individual experience

Unlike tablets and smartphones, which are designed for individual use, projectors offer a shared experience: with family, between siblings, with friends. A "home cinema" aspect that encourages watching together and allows for:
- better control over what the child is watching
- easier interactions around the content
- a soothing, cocooning atmosphere vs. an isolating experience

🧠 The "Fordham" experiment: projected screen better for comprehension and emotional distancing

In the 1960s, experiments were conducted to understand the difference between viewing with a projected "light on" screen (like in a cinema) vs. a lit "light through" screen (television). While the content presented was the same, significant differences were noted after the two viewings.
With television (direct light), there is greater emotional involvement and a loss of the feeling of exteriority, leading to a form of lethargy and loss of analytical ability, versus a greater distance from the viewed content, greater attention to scenes and cinematic effects, and a more critical mind for projected images.
Repeated since with more modern screens, the conclusions of this experiment tend to be confirmed. A parallel can also be drawn with studies on reading on screen vs. on paper which come to the same conclusion: backlighting causes sensory and cognitive overload that impairs proper assimilation of information.
🛟 Provide a secure environment

Finally, it will not have escaped your notice that tablets and smartphones were designed for adult use. Despite all the parental controls and locks you can put in place, your child is still at risk of accessing inappropriate things if their use is not closely controlled.
One of the advantages of story boxes like Tikino is also to offer a secure environment in which the child can navigate without fear: no ads, no payments, no notifications, no automatic chaining, and all content has been carefully pre-selected.
🚀 Conclusion: Tikino, much more than a projector

At Tikino, we have designed an alternative that allows the whole family to safely enjoy the magical, playful, and educational power of animated images. Our projector and its content have been designed to amaze without overstimulating, to discover animated images in a healthy way. It's a new way to approach quiet times, without sacrificing imagination or feeling guilty.
