The benefits of yoga for children
Posted by Equipe Tikino on
You have certainly already heard about the many benefits of practicing yoga for adults. But did you know that yoga can also be practiced from a very young age?
At Tikino we love it! đ
Letâs take stock together of the many benefits of this age-old discipline.
What is Yoga?
The word yoga was born in India more than 5000 years ago! It means âyoke, methodâ.
It is a term that refers to a way of life, a philosophy and a set of practices that aim to help us be calmer and more peaceful. Yoga also encourages us to be introspective in order to be more present for ourselves and for others.
In the West, Yoga is mainly used as a physical activity, notably through a series of postures which are accompanied by work on breathing.
Physical and psychological benefits
The virtues of yoga for children are numerous:
đ€žââïž Taming your body:
Through a series of adapted postures, it allows the child to gently discover their body and its sensations and, over the course of the sessions, to improve their flexibility and balance.
đ§ââïž Calm down:
By working on breathing, it facilitates concentration, relieves tension and stress and helps the child find calm.

Yoga is often practiced in groups, providing an opportunity for a moment of complicity with parents or a game with friends.
More and more schools are offering this activity in class. It allows students to be more attentive and more relaxed during lessons, which promotes learning.
How to practice yoga with children?
Yoga can be practiced from 3 years old, you just have to make sure to adapt the duration and exercises according to the level and age of the little yogi. You will only need a little space and a comfortable surface.
It is best to start with short sessions (10 to 15 min) to allow the child to become familiar with the practice.
There are many ways to include yoga in daily activities: before going to bed to calm down, with family to share a moment of relaxation, with friends to learn together...
To make the exercises simple and easily identifiable, you can, for example, select postures that have animal names, such as cat or butterfly.
The sessions are usually built around a story in order to make the child want to concentrate while maintaining an element of fun. Visual support can also be used to facilitate understanding of the exercises.
